Despite years in strength training, athletics, and physical therapy circles, fascia and somatic work have only recently come onto my radar.
Fascia seems to form a network in the body, similar to how neurons form the nervous system.
I’m interested in how fascia might store conditioned responses (physical, emotional, or psychological) and how it fits into the bigger picture of mind-body connection, movement, and healing.
I want to know if working with fascia can help me process or release old patterns, not just keep my body functional but also support recovery from physical, mental, and emotional imprints.
Exploratory Thoughts
I’m curious what it really means to “activate” fascia.
- Is it like a muscle that needs to be warmed up?
- Can fascia be influenced by meditation, breathwork, or cardio?
- Is it best thought of as a muscle, organ, or connective tissue, or something else?
I wonder if working with fascia is more about releasing tension, like with deep tissue massage, or if it’s something subtler.
Connections
It’s early to make too many connections, but I’m keen to see if/how fascia relates to:
- Mindfulness
- Meditation
- Mind-body connection
- Somatic work
- Emotional memory
- Athletic performance (and recovery)
- Pain (and tension)
- Biotensegrity (???)
- Somatic psychology
Developing Theories & Arguments
I’m not making strong claims yet, but I want to see if I can notice changes in my fascia and how that might relate to my mental or emotional state.
The traditional, mechanistic view of the body feels incomplete. Fascia might be a missing link in understanding the body as an interconnected system.
I recently saw a video (this one by The Bioneer) showing that stretching your foot can make your whole leg more flexible… apparently through the fascia. That non-local effect is fascinating.
Questions
- What does it mean to “activate” fascia?
- How can I actually work with fascia—movement, breath, meditation, something else?
- Is fascia best understood as its own system, or as part of other systems?
- Does fascia store emotional or psychological imprints?
- How does non-local flexibility work through fascia?
- How can I notice or measure changes in fascia and their impact on my mind or emotions?
